Mission
Located in the
heart of metro Taichung, the Department of Urban
Planning and Spatial Information is one of the
major three planning school in Taiwan. Since
1973, the department has been the incubator of
more than 1,300 young and professional planners,
including the urban planning head of Taiwan in
the Ministry of the Interiors.
The Department
offers three program degrees: Bachelor of
Science (BS in Urban Planning and Spatial
Information), Master of Science in Urban
Planning and Spatial Information (MUPSI), and
Master of Science for working professionals.
Urban planning is
a comprehensive discipline that concern with
both human-made and natural environments. In a
narrow sense, it manages the development of the
physical environment. In a broad sense, it
concerns social, economic and political issues.
Consequently, in order to produce planners and
researchers with practical skills, our program
is structured under a sequence of six planning
studio courses in four years that trains
planning students in the following areas of
focus:
• Improvement of physical environment, as well
as social, economic and political issues in
urban areas, including planning and design in
land use, transportation, infrastructure,
landscape and the environment as well as urban
regeneration and regional development.
• Techniques for analyzing and resolving
planning-related issues and plan-making, such as
statistical methods, forecasting, data analysis,
geographic information system, evaluation
techniques, etc. .
• Capability to develop policy options as well
as critical review of complex situations (mainly
at graduate students level).
To sum up, UPSI students have a variety of
opportunities to study theory and gain hands-on
experience in the field of urban planning, such
as study abroad and working with professors on
practical projects to obtain real life
experience.
